‘’Rotterdam Central Rotterdam wall decoration - Walljar

Station Rotterdam Central Station is the central station of Rotterdam. Rotterdam Central Station is one of the busiest stations in the Netherlands. The station is also called the international gateway of Rotterdam. An average of 170,000 travellers pass through it every day. With the painting of Rotterdam Central on the wall you can enjoy one of the architectural icons of Rotterdam. Show that you appreciate Rotterdam with a beautiful photo of Rotterdam Central Station on the wall.

History of Rotterdam Central

The first Rotterdam Central Station was officially opened on 21 May 1957, the building was designed by the architect Sybold van Ravesteyn. The station replaced the Delftse Poort station which had been damaged during the bombardment of Rotterdam. In 2007 this station was closed to make way for new construction. In March 2014 the new station building was officially opened by King Willem-Alexander.

The first metro line in the Netherlands was opened on 9 February 1968 at Rotterdam CS by Princess Beatrix. This gave the central station a metro connection with Rotterdam-Zuid. The first metro station had one island platform with two tracks. In September 2009 a newer and more spacious metro station was set up. The old metro station was demolished, which was replaced by the new station. The new station has two island platforms with three tracks.

Architecture of Rotterdam Central

The new station building was delivered by Team CS, a joint venture between MVSA Meyer and Van Schooten Architects, Benthem Crouwel and West 8. The design team designed the station in such a way that the canopy over the tracks allows passengers to wait for their train dry and comfortable on the platforms. The roof above the platforms is partially covered with solar panels. Daylight shines through the large glass sections in the platforms; this even reaches the passenger tunnel under the tracks. The underpass has been widened to make room for shops and restaurants and forms one whole with the station hall. The north side of the station has a modest design. The centre side is what makes this station so iconic. The large dimensions of the hall and the finish with wood and red natural stone give the station a high quality appearance. The tip of the iconic roof, entirely clad in stainless steel, points to the heart of Rotterdam.

In the new station building you can still find a number of historical elements of the old station building. The original clock on the facade of the station, the (LED-lit) letters Central Station, and the two granite sculptures on platform 1, also known as the 'speculaasjes' (biscuits). These elements are still from the architect Sybold van Ravesteyn.

The reason for the construction of the new station was the lack of capacity of the old station area. Approximately 110,000 passengers a day came to the station. Due to the arrival of the high-speed train and Randstadrail, an increase in passenger numbers was expected; it is expected that by 2025 there will be as many as 323,000 passengers a day at Rotterdam Central Station.
